FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
I’m quite unfit – will I be able to keep up?
Absolutely! Many of my clients feel this way at the start. Classes are small (maximum four people), so everything is adjusted to suit you. You won’t be expected to keep up with anyone else – you work at your own pace and get personalised assistance and instruction throughout the class.
What if I have injuries or ongoing aches and pains?
This is an area that I specialise in! Many clients come with injuries, stiffness or areas they’re unsure about. I’ll guide you safely, with options and adjustments so you can build strength without aggravating anything. If you’re under the care of a physio or surgeon, I can also connect with them to work together for your injury or post-surgical rehabilitation.
I’ve never done Pilates before – is that okay?
It’s absolutely fine, and congratulations on stepping out of your comfort zone to try something new! You don’t need any prior experience. I’ll talk you through everything and help you understand what you’re doing and why, so you feel empowered as you gain strength, mobility, and confidence.
What makes your studio different from a reformer studio or gym?
This is a quieter, more personalised environment where you’re more than just another member. There are no large classes, no loud music, and no pressure to perform. Instead, you’ll get individual attention, thoughtful instruction, and a focus on how your body moves and feels, rather than just pushing through a workout.
What kind of results can I expect?
Most clients notice they feel stronger, more mobile, and more comfortable in their bodies, and often after the first class people will comment that they feel taller! Everyday things become easier, like getting up from the floor, walking, lifting and carrying things, and moving without stiffness. It’s about building a body that supports your life, not just exercising for the sake of it. Your nervous system also benefits - mindful breath and movement can help reduce stress and anxiety, and you may even notice you start sleeping better.
Will I feel sore afterwards?
You may feel that you’ve used muscles in a different way, especially at the beginning. But the goal isn’t to leave you exhausted or depleted – you should walk out feeling worked, but also more energised and balanced. If you don’t feel a “burn”, that doesn’t mean you haven’t worked out.
I’m worried I’ll be most uncoordinated person there
Okay, so this one isn’t a question, but it is a very common concern!
Because the groups are small, everyone is working at their own level, and focused on themselves rather than worrying about what others are doing. There’s no comparison, no pressure, and no expectation to be at a certain standard. And even if you are unco – so what? The controlled, mindful movements of Pilates will improve your coordination, as well as your strength, balance, and mobility, so being uncoordinated is one more reason to start your Pilates journey rather than avoid it!
What equipment do you use?
We use a range of Pilates apparatus including the chair, springboard, arc and various small apparatus, all of which mean we can support and/or challenge you during each exercise as appropriate.
How often should I come?
I have clients that come once, twice, and 3 times a week. If this is the only exercise you’re doing, 2-3 classes a week would be really beneficial, but if one a week is what fits your budget and your schedule, you’ll start to see the benefits after a few weeks – consistency is key!
What should I expect from my first session?
I invite you to arrive ten minutes before your first class, so that we can discuss any injuries or niggles (you will have filled out a new client form online beforehand so I’ll be aware of these), and I’ll give you a quick tour of the studio and equipment. It’s normal to feel a bit overwhelmed during your first class as you try out the different equipment and start to learn new terminology, and this is why the new client intro offer is for 2 classes - the second time is less scary, you may have met some of the other clients during your first class, and everything will feel a bit more relaxed! But the feedback after first classes is overwhelmingly positive and newbies can’t wait to come back for their next class.
I’m over 50 (or 60) – is this suitable for me?
Yes – that’s exactly who I work with! I’m 51 myself, and the majority of my clients are mid-40s and beyond. Everything is designed with this stage of life in mind: maintaining strength, improving mobility, and supporting your body so you can keep doing the things you enjoy. It’s practical, enjoyable movement to create sustainable strength and mobility, so you can have a great quality of life, and do all the things you want to do, through midlife and beyond!
Do you offer free trial sessions or introductory options?
I don’t offer free trials as class spaces are so limited, however my intro offer of your first two Studio Essentials classes is a great place to start and gives you the opportunity to see how you feel before committing to buying a ten-class pass or making any further commitment.
